MFG NEWS / NOUVELLES DU MFG

THE FILM POP NEWSLETTER: September 6, 2006

Hi friends of Film Pop!

Welcome to the first edition of the Film Pop newsletter, where we’ll keep you abreast of what’s up with the festival and try to give you some advance word on programming, passes and everything Film Pop.

It’s positively bustling in Film Pop quarters these days. Surprisingly, putting together a one-of-a-kind top-notch film festival is a tad… draining! After watching submissions until our eyes bled, and kissing and a’ courting various red hot international filmmakers, our programming is now complete! And what a program it is…

Film Pop is proud to be presenting the Montreal debut of guitar wizard Gary Lucas’ internationally acclaimed live score for the silent German classic The Golem, a live re-imagining of Winnipeg filmmaker Deco Dawson’s Dumb Angel, the Montreal debut of San Francisco’s Wet Gate Collective, the Montreal premieres of Jim Finn’s Interkosmos; Andrew Bujalski’s Mutual Appreciation; Kevin McAlester’s powerhouse doc about Roky Erickson, You’re Gonna Miss Me; and direct from Berlin: Oliver Rihs’ Schwarze Schafe (Black Sheep). Montreal gets in on the act with Ezra Soiferman’s salute to Simcha’s Grocery called Posthumous Pickle Party, Vanya Rose’s Montreal Stories 1971, and the Double Negative Collective, to name but a few! Expect to see the very best of Montreal independent film, international underground cinema, and a number of fantastic rock docs, in what promises to be Film Pop’s biggest and best year yet.

In addition to its regular programming and crossovers with the music festival, Puces Pop (the arts fair) and the Future of Music Conference, Film Pop is debuting Making Music with the National Film Board of Canada, an exciting new filmmaking initiative pairing up and coming filmmakers and red hot Montreal bands for a series of original short films co-produced with the NFB. The bands? Try The Besnard Lakes, Dandi Wind, Dishwasher, SoCalled and Bell Orchestre. Better believe we’re pretty excited about it!

And now here’s some really big news, and a major heads up: FILM POP PASSES ARE ON SALE NOW! For the first year ever, festival attendees have the option of buying a full Pop Montreal pass or a special Film Pop pass! The Film Pop pass gets you into all Film Pop events except for the Opening Gala with Gonzales and Gary Lucas’ Golem. There is a special (TOP SECRET) early bird price before September 15th of $25. After that, it’s $35. The value of the pass is around $95, so this is a steal of a deal, folks. Passes are available at www.admission.com.

Our web site is still in a sorry state, but we’ll let you know when we have re-launched – hopefully in the next week!

FULL FILM POP SCHEDULE AND CATALOGUE AVAILABLE MID-SEPTEMBER. We look forward to seeing you at the festival! Love, Film Pop

*Forget who we are?
Montreal has a film festival buddy, and its name is – shockingly! – Film Pop. Now entering its third year, the festival aims to present new independent cinema and its unsung cinematic forebears in a variety of unconventional venues and contexts throughout Montreal. Film Pop is all about busting out of the rusty old film festival cage, and finding fun new ways to present movies, with a particular predilection for the musical. It’s “where movies and music make out in the dark,” as the old saying goes. Film Pop runs alongside and within the Pop Montreal International Music Festival for the full five days of the festival, from October 4th to the 8th
